Ken's Custom Microphones

6/3/09

First and foremost...No, these aren't for sale. So please don't start sending orders or asking how much to build one for you....I'll save the trouble, "Onnne Meeellion Dawllors"...each.

Unlike the rip-offs and opportunists taking advantage of the "trend" out there, I make these for MY use and for MY research. Not to make a buck off of YOU.

I know, some people are natural EVP magnets, and can get great ones with a plain recorder. But I haven't had much luck in the past, so I need specialty gear. With a few of these, I've had tremendous luck.

Since audio recordings are about the best evidence so far, and since photos and video are easily debunked, I think sound is the new way to go. BUT...we'll need to find a reliable method or device.

Some of the devices out there like the Frank's Box, the Radio Shack Hack, the "Ghost Box", and the Ovilus are a joke. Those with no techy knowledge or understanding of radio frequencies think they're the greatest thing ever, but they're being fooled...just like what digital cameras did to ghost photography.

Frank's Box and the Radio Shack Hack operate on AM & FM radio frequencies. It could be very easy to pick up a stray radio band and think its a response. This is like the old experiment of giving a chimp a typewriter. Eventually he'll spell a word, but it doesn't mean he did it on purpose.

This Ovilus thing is just plain ridiculous. Do the homework on it. Even the makers of it say "For Entertainment Only", and make no claims about the answers it gives. Hell, if you want to go that route, just take an old "Magic 8-Ball" on a hunt with you. You'll get just as accurate answers.

Its operated on an IC chip called "SpeakJet". This chip is the same voice response mechanism used in those little robotic dogs and Ferbies. They're pre-programmed with command and response words...so naturally if you say "hello", it's going to respond with a greeting also, or to any question that it has an answer for.

Don't waste your money folks. They're a TOTAL FRIKKIN RIP-OFF!!

(yep, there's another article in the works proving "ghost boxes" don't work)

Ok, that being said, and hopefully cleared up and understood...on with the show!
...and we'll say it again...if you want to make some of these for your own personal use, that's fine, but if you try to claim it as your idea I'll hunt you down and give you a high colonic with Liquid Plumber.

The Splitter 2/24/09

Recorded sound is divided into two channels...Left and Right.

This mic splits them into individual channels by using separate mic elements, but can also be switched to record in stereo.

I don't know about anybody else, but in working with my own recordings, the good ones showed up on the left channel. Makes ya go, hmmmmmm...

The Relay Mic System 5/2/09

I made this for total room coverage with one recorder.

Then came up with the idea to spread them out better with a Junction Box.

This one can either spread out the individual units, or have four recorders hooked to it, or the units can be used by themselves.

I'm using six foot cables and go wall to wall. Not much can get by then...

Flashlight Mic 5/25/09

Nothing real fancy, just a multipurpose microphone tool with a handy built in flashlight. Just in case mine goes dead, it's a good backup light.

The Light Mic 5/30/09

Yes, light wave frequencies make noise...and they can be recorded.

The prototype is an idea from David Mierzwinski , formerly of AA-EVP? I can't find him anywhere now, but he did some pretty neat stuff with this. Dave, if you read this, get back to me!

David's is a simple design.

Then one day I had a "Eureka Moment". What if we could record light waves, and still hear what's going on in the room? So I plugged David's optical mic into one of the Relay Mic units.

EUREKA!!!! It worked!!

So I beefed it up a bit and made it into one contained unit.

This may have some potential.

The Duel Frequency Mic 3/5/06

Add an Ultrasonic Transducer to a couple of Mic elements, and you can record BOTH acoustic AND ultrasonic sound at the same time. I've had MUCH luck with this one!

And here is my pride and joy...

The Special Hauntings Investigation Technology 3/19/09

I had this idea for a couple of years, but never ran with it. This winter I finally grew a set, and decided to go for it. I thought it through for a couple of weeks, got everything the way I wanted it in my head, and made the Radio Shack run.

I was all excited and must've had a big grin when I walked in the door. Kellie asks:

"What are you making now?"

In my jubilation, I replied:

"Aww this thing's gonna be the shit!"

"Sooooooo, thats what you're gonna call it...The Shit?"

" *shrug*....Ok"

Well, we really can't just come out and call it "The Shit" now can we?

The S.H.I.T. is multi-functional all-in-one ghost hunting tool.

Its a Duel Frequency Microphone...

Its a backup flashlight...

And its a new and improved Burble...much better than the previous versions.

I used this at a house, and I have to tell you, I left most of my stuff in the kitchen because I had everything I needed right here. Its sort of like a Swiss Army Knife.

There are only three of these on the planet, and I'm not making anymore. I wanted it to be a limited production thing, so please don't ask.

*Updated* 10/16/09

I re-worked the mic system and added a light mic to the mix. Now its a Triple-Frequency microphone...Acoustic/Ultra-sonic/Light wave.

The Compass Mic

Just goes to show, you can make a microphone out of anything.

And on that note..

The World's Coolest Microphone

I'm sitting at a red-light one day, just daydreaming and looking around, and looked at my gearshift knob. I thought to myself, "That would make a cool microphone."

It does...

Direct Plug-in 2/26/09

My new thing is cordless mics. Why didn't somebody think of this sooner?

I don't know about you, but I'm tired of cords, cables, and microphone wires.

You have to be an octopus to carry a recorder, the mic, and a flashlight at the same time.

Even though I'm using digital recorders now, using an external mic is still the best for sound quality. I made this one out of an old plastic key ring flashlight. Its small, lightweight, isn't bulky or awkward to carry, and the playback sound is great.

Add a couple of right-angle adapters (radio shack) and it becomes more versatile.

You can walk around with it.

Set it down as a small Boom Mic.

Fold it up and put it in your pocket

I'll call him...Mini-Me 12/15/09

My homage to Mike Myers. Sorry Mike, I couldn't think of a better name for it.

Like its predecessor, only half the size, and just as powerful.

Sacrifice a cheapy cell phone headset from Dollar General, and take the mic out of it.

Which lead to...

Mini-Me Double Barrel 12/28/09

Plugged into a Radio Shack 2-into-1 adapter, twice the power with no bulk at all.

Which lead to...

Mini-Me Double Barrel Light Mic 1/13/10

I really like the Light Mic thing. I've gotten great recordings and results from it, but the cord became a pain. So I made a Direct Plug-In Light Mic.

This was better than with a cord, but a bit bulky and I didn't want to ruin the jacks in the recorder by weighing it down.

The MMDBLM was kind of tricky to get the bugs figured out, but it works like a regular one with no bulk and hardly any weight at all.

Much better...Which would you rather carry?

Its not the size of your mic, its how you record with it.

(I didn't just say that)

There ya have it. A little creative ingenuity goes a long way...either for the serious practical side, or just messing around.

It could be wise to invest in Radio Shack stock between December and March. You'd think they'd give me a sponsorship or something already...but nooooooooo.
